Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) Slim (PSP-2000) Console
The PSP 2000, aka "Slim", is a newly upgraded version of the already successful PSP. At first glance differences are not apparent, but as soon as you pick one up you discover it is thinner, much lighter, and sleeker than the original. At first glance differences are not apparent, but as soon as you pick one up you discover it is thinner, much lighter, and sleeker than the original. It also has a few new tricks up its sleeve such as improved content loading time, although this still remains longer than the competing Nintendo DS. Another new feature is an AV output jack allowing video output (via an optional cable) to another display device. Movies stored on UMD or Memory Stick Duo cards can be outputted at an impressive 720x480 resolution, but image quality depends on the level of compression of the source media. Games unfortunately are limited to the native 480x272 PSP resolution which does not fare well on large displays, and there have also been reported issues with games failing to work on devices with progressive-scan. The new PSP is still primarily a gaming device but it maintains the original PSP's various multimedia capabilities, including audio/video playback, image viewing, wireless network connectivity and USB computer connectivity, which can now also be used to recharge the battery. The PSP 2000 "Slim" is certainly very attractive, but apart from a smoother, slimmer and lighter design there are no other significant innovations, and the impressive 4.3-inch wide-screen LCD unfortunately remains a dust and fingerprint magnet.
